PRP

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to stimulate new cell growth, helping to improve skin cells to function as optimally as they can.

PRP is injected into targeted areas of the skin and forms an environment which pushes the patient’s own healing system and stem cells into overdrive and causes an extra boost in collagen and elastin production. This regenerative process of the skin has many benefits.

PRP is a great treatment for both men and women. PRP is used for cosmetic procedures, for the treatment of injuries and for hair loss.

Your blood is essentially made up of four components: red blood cells, white blood cells, the plasma, and the platelets.

The process involves taking a small sample of your blood which is spun in a centrifuge, separating the platelets (growth factors) from the red blood cells.

The end product PRP, is rich in white blood cells and growth factors. PRP can be administered by injections, as well as in combination with Skin Needling.

Downtime

Following the procedure a little bit of discomfort may occur as the white blood cells and growth factors begin the healing process. The areas treated may be slightly red, tender, swollen or bruised. These side effects are temporary and will ease, generally within 2-5 days.

Skin cells need time to develop, so you don’t notice the results right away.

Many people notice improvements in overall skin appearance 4 weeks after the procedures, however, it can take up to 12 weeks for full results to take effect. As a general guide, we typically recommend a treatment course of 3 to 4 sessions, with 4 week intervals in between, then a maintenance treatment every 9 to 12 months

Post care

To maximise the healing benefits from the PRP Therapy, please follow these guidelines:

  • Do not wash your face with cleansers or apply liquid make-up for 12 hours post-procedure. If you need to wash your face, please do so only after 4 hours and use warm water without soap
  • If you require pain relief, use paracetamol, do not use any anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen
  • Avoid oral steroids such as prednisone for 7 days post procedure with permission from your prescribing physician
  • For patients who regularly take aspirin, resume 48 hours post procedure, unless otherwise directed by physician
  • Minimise alcohol, caffeine and supplements that may increase bruising for 2 days post procedure
  • Avoid exercise that would usually create a flushed face or excessive facial perspiration for 24 hours post procedure.

As with normal medical guidelines – a healthy diet, minimal caffeine/alcohol and adequate sleep will allow your body the best chance for an optimal outcome. Individual healing will progress at different rates depending on age, general health and skin condition.

Infections caused by PRP are extremely rare, however, if you experience progressive swelling, redness, heat, oozing, or changes to the treatment site 24 hours after your procedure please contact Emma.
